Not all card readers are placed on a door for access control. Some card readers are used to read cards at a computer either for login purposes or to assign a card to a user. There are many ways desktop card readers are used in many different industries. Unicard supply a wide range of USB plug and play card readers to read the card number or CSN (Card serial number) simply by presenting your card to the reader. Not every card reader will read all card types and formats. Access readers are normally configured to respond to only one card technology and format, they are then further configured in the access control system to only allow access to specific site codes and card numbers.

It is important when picking an access reader from the HID reader range, that your card technology such as proximity, mifare, iclass and more are compatible with the access reader you choose. Unicard can help with this, please contact us for assistance.

It is extremely common for our customers not to know their access control format however Unicard can assist over the phone to ask some simple questions to ascertain what your card technology and format is. If we are unable to find any further information over the phone, Unicard will request a card or fob sample which will provide an immediate result and we can provide a quote for more card/fob stock and access readers to suit.

An ‘Access Controller’ is usually installed by a security installer which is then connected to Access Readers. The Access Readers are of a thin build and are normally installed on a door frame. Depending on the card/fob credentials that are presented, the access readers will either revoke access or allow access by releasing a magnetic door strike (or similar) for a limited time which will allow the card holder to open the door.

HID Access control readers provide an extra security layer which is optional on their new HID Signo reader range. The HID readers which include a ‘K’ in their part number have a keypad which requires the card holder to badge a card and present a pin code.

No, HID readers come with a standard configuration which allows them to read the more common card technologies and formats.

However, if your card format is secured and locked down with custom keys or applications, then configuration is required to be able to read your custom cards.

There are specific HID readers which come with a USB cable to plug directly into your computer. These are known as HID Omnikey readers.

These Omnikey reader range can be used in many ways such as through your custom software application to badge a card and assign a user or alternatively with the HID Asure ID program for reading and writing cards.
